Dr. Seuss’s career started as a creator of propaganda cartoons during World War II. See some of them here.
I wonder if we’ve ever lost a planet before today?

I’m still not clear on whether Dwarf Planet is a subset of a greater category of “Planet” along with Giant Planet or Classic Planet - whatever we’re calling the core eight now - or if it’s a separate category. Aside from saying it doesn’t qualify as a planet (it’s eliptical orbit doesn’t violate any of the three rules simplified by the ASSociated Press), we don’t have a definition for WTF a Dwarf Planet is.
Anyway, I really don’t see what the hubbub is about. We’ve never actually had a definition for “Planet” - which is why the IAU has been trying to come to some conclusion for X + Y^Z years. All the media headlines like “Dark Day for Pluto” and “Pluto Demoted” just piss me off.
I like Patricia Tombaugh’s (Clyde’s widow) comment on what her late husband once said re: Pluto. Something along the lines of “It’s there. You can do what you want with it.” (Can’t find the exact quote.)
If anyone is ever in the Flagstaff area, definately check out the Lowell Observatory and take the tour of the telescope Pluto was discovered with. Pretty cool. In an antiquarian geek kind of way.
By the way, I also like the new header photo. And the larger size for in-blog photos. I can actually tell what they are now. Yay.
